Podcasting is one of the newest and most innovative approaches to media distribution. Podcasts (or webcasts as they are sometimes called) are serialized audio or video programs. The files can be viewed directly from a website or downloaded from a feed site such as iTunes, Podcast.com, etc. The file can then be played directly or transferred to a portable device such as an iPod or smart phone. Podcasts can also be played on a standard T.V. using a Tivo or an apple T.V.

What makes podcasts unique is the idea of subscription. When a user finds a podcast they like they simply click on a subscribe button. As new episodes are added, they are automatically downloaded to the user.

Podcasts can have chapter markers, hyperlinks and other media assets embedded in them. Certainly, Apple and iTunes are most often associated with podcasts but podcasts can just as easily be viewed on a Windows, Linux, or Unix platform.

From a user standpoint podcasts can provide information and entertainment on just about any conceivable topic. From a commercial standpoint podcast are an excellent way to keep customers informed about you product or services

The fact that NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) features extensive seminars on podcasting attest to their growing importance in the world of communication.
